I have to be honest with you, recently I’ve been beauty obsessed. More so than I have ever been (I partly blame it on Into the Gloss!). It’s not the kind of obsession that I NEED beauty products to face the world, or to survive (to survive? That’s a ridiculous thought…isn’t it??), but more so, the kind of obsession that leads to the appreciation of luxury items. Slowly but surely, I’ve started investing my money less in to the quantity of beauty supplies and more in to the quality of products. In other words, much pricier products but, thankfully, more effective ones at that.

After dutiful trial and error, pockets of money and many Mecca carry bags later, I’ve finally discovered my be-all-end-all beauty products that consistently work for me.

"Keep it simple, Stupid!"

Trying to keep things in my life as simple as possible by minimizing the excess. I've started by culling my wardrobe back to the basics. Slowly, I will introduce investment, staple pieces that work together with the aim of recycling outfits. One piece that survived the cut is my favorite denim dress. The cut is perfect, the colour is a brilliant blue, and the fabric is easy: wash and wear, baby! It's proved its staple-status by always feeling fresh whenever I choose to wear it.

Keeping things simple (stupid) by wearing it with air-dried hair, my daily makeup and my jordy ring.

With today's beaming sun it seemed only fitting to whip out my lil' felt hat. It performed as the perfect accessory (and sun protection - so practical!) to my otherwise simple outfit. As it played the role of my main - if not only - accessory, I realised how much my style has changed. I like to see this change as maturing.

Now, I opt for practicality and simplicity over trends and fuss. When it comes to finalising a purchase, I religiously ask myself "will this become a staple in my wardrobe?". From this simple strategy, my purchases have become fewer but more thorough. Consequently, my wardrobe feels well composed. This is a huge milestone for me, having a terrible past as a hoarder. With less things weighing me down, I can finally breath.

I am completely aware of how white my legs are. It's like the rebirth of my lower limbs right now. They have not seen the sun for months. Literally. Don't worry, I'm currently working on rectifying this situation...

Lately I've been playing with the look of crisp whites. I think it's inspired by my moving in with good friends. We've been endlessly entertaining one another with ways of decorating our place together. My collection of inspirational pics consisted of mostly all-white homes with earthy, eclectic touches. Think white-walled houses lined with framed typography, pot plants, fluffy cream rugs, quirky glass-blown lamps and hard-wood furniture - the perfectly balanced contrast of modern tones and earthy textures.

On the first morning in my new place, when it came to getting dressed, there was an undeniable connection between my clothing choices and my new surroundings. I went straight for my crisp white shirt and teamed it with a contrasting plush-fabric, plum colored skirt and finished the look off with an earthy, gold leaf necklace. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely seeing some weird connection between my outfit and my folder of home inspirational pics.

Sunday was only a brief introduction of what this year's summer entails.

The day in a nutshell:

Firstly, there was the surroundings of sunny Gold Coast's beach.
Then came the most delightful banana smoothies.
Followed by walking under the sun, past dreams in the form of Hermés, Prada and Louis Vuitton stores.
Gained entry into the Louis Vuitton store, despite my BF's cousin's entirely tattooed leg (he's been refused entry by LV security before - shame on them! Marc Jacobs, himself, appreciates a well-designed tattoo).
Relaxed to beers under the sun at an Irish pub.
Enjoyed the endless entertainment provided by street acts.
And to top the experience off, indulged in a Mexican dinner amongst the most brilliantly cliched Mexican decor.

First impressions are only the tip of the iceberg, however.

This summer is going to be sooo good.

During my morning mirror stop I noticed something, something different. No, no. I didn't have a Freaky Friday moment where I woke up as my mother (can you imagine that? What a morning!), but what I did notice was my four leaf clover charm had fallen off my necklace. I felt my stomach drop over the realisation that I won't ever find that teeny-tiny charm, being as thin as paper and almost as small as a grain of rice. Plus it could be ANYWHERE.

It's a sad, sad moment when you lose your favourite piece of jewelry. You wear it almost every single day. You take it for granted. Everyday when you look in the mirror, you see it but you don't see it. And then one day you wake up and it's GONE. For lack of better expression, it feels like someone has robbed you of your uniform. Yahmsayin?

And that's what brings me to the point of this post; unintentionally, I've gradually but surely developed a uniform. I wear the same fine gold chain now sans charm *cue violin music here*, two rings (Jordy by Jordan Askill rose gold heart ring and my Meadowlark serpent ring to practice my parseltongue skills on), my dad's old watch, my mini sausage dog earrings (they whisper secrets in to my ears), Chanel Rouge Noir (or for a more 'nude' look, nothing at all), finished with a spritz of perfume. Some days I'll add more accessories/change my nail polish depending on my outfit but, essentially, this is the foundation of my look. A subtle, carefully composed uniform. Now to find a new charm...

I'm sorry, but I must take this post-opportunity to share with you a scent that is so special to me that I'd feel greedy keeping it to myself. First, one should know when it comes to fragrances, I am extremely fussy. I have bought countless perfumes that I can never seem to finish, only for them to play as decoration on my dressing table.

To me, a fragrance must evoke something within you. It must conjure up beautiful memories, create emotion, and bring a little bit of magic into your everyday life. You must know that a fragrance will do this for you the moment it fills the air around you. When I first met Serge Lutens' Un bois vanille it was love. Instantly.

I chop and change beauty products so often that even though this photo was taken a week ago, already I have changed my foundation from Laura Mercier Silk Crème Foundation to NARS Sheer Glow. Because of this switch, I've also swapped the NATIO Illuminating Primer to the NARS oil-free primer, simply because it works so well with Sheer Glow. Other than that, this photo is pretty up-to-date when it comes to the products I'm loving 'right now'.

This weekend some friends and I gathered all our pre-loved goodies for the purpose of setting up our own little vintage stall at Fishermans Road Markets, one of the Sunshine Coasts best flea markets. My sister created signs which read 'Jackets', 'Vests', etc. and we priced everything below $12 and set up stall. A strategically placed wizard statue/costume worked wonders for luring unsuspecting customers in. We even had a few punters asking how much it was selling for. Alas, not for sale buddy. Waking up at 4:30am to setup a market stall on a Sunday (my usual sleep-in-til-midday day) proved to be rather painful but well worth the loss of sleep. What an experience!

Almost every morning that there is a chilly wind I've worn this Dion Lee for Cue jacket. Its wool blend allows me to brave the winds, fashionably. Australian winters are rather temperamental and by mid-morning you find yourself stripping off all of your layers, leaving you baring your ill-prepared bottom layers. The slits at the elbows of this jacket make it perfect for Aussie winters as it breathes when the temperature heats up so I can keep it on all day.

I couldn't resist sharing this stunning necklace my dearest (and inspiring) friend gave me. With its eclectic combination of coins and chains, the moment I put it on I feel inspired to travel the world collecting trinkets.

I'm in love and his name is Canon 60D. It's been a while since I've handled a DSLR and let me tell you, it's so good to be happy snapping again. Since receiving it in the mail, my boyfriend thinks I'm a changed person as I was feeling a little uninspired since the death of my old DSLR. I can't wait to see what this spectacular piece of machinery brings to the blog.

In the meantime, here are some quick snaps that I took while experimenting with the 60D over the weekend. The following images are of the Thai feast I enjoyed cooked up by my mum and her friends and the moments spent with my sister and friends over the course of 2 days and 2 nights. The past weekend included a cosy house gathering followed by clubbing along the beach, the best dinner party I've ever been to and to top off one of my best weekends to date, a much needed big breakfast with amazing company.

What I wore on a movie date to see Super 8 with my boy tonight. Lilac lace dress, Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Biarritz and Chanel Vitalumiere Eclat in Beige Desert. I highly recommend seeing the film, especially if you love your Sci-Fi thrillers and enjoyed Lost. For the rest of the night it left me on edge. In a good way, of course.

It's been so cold lately that each morning I've skipped washing my hair to avoid a cold neck and have instead been "dry cleaning" my scalp with baby powder (on a side note, the corn starch version, being finer, is much better than the talc as it doesn't leave you feeling cake-like and looking 40 years older).

After finally braving the winter woos and washing my hair this morning - hence my damp hair in these images - I thought that there must be better ways to improve my winter grooming that avoids washing my hair (which, by the way, increases the likelihood of catching a cold).

So, I decided to spend my day-off in my warm, knitted sweater-dress, while sipping tea and indulged in some light reading to help pick-me-up and/or inspire me as I pondered my thought on better grooming. When I say light reading, basically I casually flipped through my fav coffee table books on makeup and beauty.

And then it came to me: if I can't have perfectly washed hair every day, bring on more fun makeup techniques.

So here are three of the best books that I own on beauty. I highly recommend getting your warm mittens on 1 or all 3 of these, especially if you're suffering from the winter blues.

Holmes&Co.: Your parents are both tailors, how did this influence your interest in fashion?
Faridah McCaul: My dad is a tailor of 30 years experience and has recorded every step of his journey through film photographs – he was quite a talented photographer too! Growing up I’d flip through his leather bound photo albums curious with questions like “what leather is that jacket made from, dad?” or “how did you make that fringed suede skirt?” or “Dad, is that a REAL model wearing YOUR stuff?” Just from his photographs I began to gain my own eye for design, fit and style and soon after developed a consuming passion for fashion.

HC: Describe your style?
FM: Eclectic. My style has developed from the influence of my dad’s photo albums, the top fashion magazines, street style and old films. I’d say it’s a mix of classic styles, vintage treasures and fresh designers.

HC: What drew you to blogging?
FM: The accessibility of it. It gives you a voice about fashion. When in the past fashion has so often been portrayed as this exclusive, luxurious alliance, blogging provides you with a VIP pass where you can see everything AND have an opinion on it.

HC: What do you think about the influence bloggers now have on designers and seasonal trends?
FM: I don’t think that bloggers have an influence on designers’ creativity but more so on the way the fashion industry works. Blogging is this instant phenomenon, therefore trends are quick to come and go. This fast-paced influence is so powerful that it has encouraged consumerism, so I think the success of fast-fashion has exploded in the last few years.
What I do think blogging has influenced is designer’s marketing strategies. Bloggers are now seated front row because of the mass market they speak out to. It’s a clever move. Designers can influence a massive audience in a second if their collection is posted on a blog, rather than waiting months for a magazine to go to print.

HC: What do you love most about blogging?
FM: The strong community it has created. It’s amazing how it brings together people from all over the world who all share one thing: a love for fashion. When you can have an opinion on a certain trend or have a take on a certain style and it can be read from anywhere in the world (and in some cases influence someone), that’s something pretty special.

HC: Winter style picks?
FM: The essentials: the most perfect camel trench for colder days, a classic leather jacket – with sheerling, a tailored blazer, Dr Denim jeans, a low-heel ankle boot in suede Isabel Marant style, and sweaters in nude, navy, black, and striped.

HC: Style icons?
FM: Clémence Poséy, Audrey Hepburn and French women confident in their style.

It appears that I was playing peek-a-boo with the camera in these pictures. I guess there's always fun to be had when you're wrapped up in love with a new jacket. My new caramel wool jacket can be worn like a swing jacket (perfect for animated dance) or you can wrap yourself within it, belted at the waist as I decided today. What I love most about this find is that it has a sneaky leopard print lining. When I wear it wrapped up the sneaky leopard print plays on my mind like my own naughty little secret.

Apologies if you're tired of the collages. It's the only thing I can think of doing that offers my own take on images, while I haven't got a camera to take original photos. No fear - I'm planning on getting my new camera within the next few weeks, which means the outfit posts will be returning very soon!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the marvelous Jane Birkin's style as much as I do.

I've been collecting images of her for quite some time now, so it was extremely difficult to narrow them down for this collage. Of course, once I finished the collage I found about 124 more outfits that I wanted to include, but I think that the final ones depict her style flawlessly.

Her style is ageless - the perfect mix of simplicity, elegance and effortlessness.

The secrets to her chic French allure:

Perfectly tousled hair. By perfectly tousled it's got to seem like "Oh, I just wake up with beautiful hair".
A signature fine gold, chain necklace. Preferably at a length that sits delicately on the collar bone where a tiny heart pendant can rest elegantly.
A tailored trench coat. And not just one. Once you find a style that looks good, buy it in 4 other colours. Black, beige, camel and white, that is. Are they even colours?
Relaxed yet chic basics. Basics with studied elegance and/or chicness. Think baby soft T-shirts with slight signs of wear, very short but cute shift dresses, very short knitted turtleneck dresses in neutral tones and distressed jeans with a flare and/or without.
Over the knee boots or thick socks. Anything over the knee to be worn with the very short dresses. Jane would always show off those endless legs tastefully.
A vintage wicker basket. The more vintage the better. If it looks new, it doesn't look like you've been on many picnics and that takes away from your allure.
A Hermes Birkin bag: if it's within your budget.
Clinically-proven vitamin supplements. Or a natural positive energy and zest for life.
A confident smile that could light up a room. Be proud of the smile you're born with, it truly is beautiful.

Now that I've found the perfect trench, I've inevitably developed a new search for something a little warmer. As perfect as this trench may seem, its light-weight properties have shown to not be the best shield of choice against the chilly wind passing through these days. This leaves me craving a new kind of outerwear, something that features a blend of mostly wool and preferably in a camel tone. While I'm saving my pennies, I thought it best to gather some visual inspiration in the form of a collage to help channel my lust. Love you Melody

I am in no way financially safe to be hunting for anything fashion related, so when I stumbled across this vintage trench from the 1970s at an antique store I was torn. However, over much umming and ahhing, and terrible calculations of my budget for the coming week, I bit the bullet and this baby became my very own. It's lightweight yet warm, features the ultimate amount of interest in its navy trim, is a better colour than I could have imagined and has the smartest 70s cut. I'm feeling pretty positive that my search for the perfect trench is now over without it even having begun.

I've noticed that the quality of my blog content is noticeably better whenever I visit the family home. Not only is the scenery of the photographs much more beautiful (so much luscious greenery) but the photography is much more expressive and stunning (thank you sissy, you've got a true talent!). What definitely transcends is my lifted spirit. When I go back to my roots and visit the family I feel revitalized and I'm sure that is translated in these image.

Be it the southwesterly winds in combination with what remains of the summer sun - whatever it is, it's perfect. It's crisp enough to wear jeans and a blazer but sunny enough that your spirits are lifted. Transitional weather is a little bit magic, really. If only you could put a pause on the weather.

I know, I know, more iphone shots - it's my attempt to keep the blog's ball rollin' while I save my pennies for a new camera. The old Canon 1000D decided that the motherboard was not its friend and refuses to work with it. Without a cooperating motherboard, my camera is essentially a hunk of plastic. That's how stupid a $1000+ camera (at the time of purchase) looks when it does not take photos: like a hunk of plastic. I can't wait to show old 1000D who's boss when I bring home a shiny new upgrade that will provide a whole new outlook on life to this blog.

I spent the festive weekend at my family home and indulged in two separate food parties in one day. A delightful Thai meal at my parent's house followed by a HUGE Italian feast down the road at my friend's stunning home (million-dollar views of luscious green mountains, I tell you!).
I'm stuffed.

These photos were taken by my sister at my family home. She lives in a really neat renovated shed just off my parent's house. Not only does she have a sound-proof personal space but just behind is her own mini enchanted forest - bamboo style. Here are some behind-the-scenes snaps of a fashion shoot I did the makeup for, today. The theme "Basement Moth" was a collaborated development by the stylist and photographer after exploring the stylist's basement for a possible venue. We ended up using the basement of her house, which, by the end of the day, invited the most angelic light through its decaying windows. I'm pretty excited to get the images from the photographer. When it comes to accessorising, I've recently been caught up in the notion of minimalism. With all my focus on learning to simplify, I've neglected my overflowing collection of jewelry. After showering, dressing and proceeding to put on my signature twig ring, I was then transfixed by the beacon of light that led me to trying on many of my favourite pieces of jewelry. I noticed that I only picked out those that fit in to the gold or silver category, so I'm trying to work out if it was my inner minimalist or "conscious maximist" at play. I highly recommend reading this if you'd like to practice the art of the "conscious maximist".

This morning we enjoyed a HUGE breakfast at a cute little organic cafe called Cirque in the bohemian end of New Farm. After we finished off our breakfast dishes (we cleaned off those plates it was that good) we were converted. We loved our meals that much that we ordered a second dish of French toast w/ fresh strawberries, berry compote, pouring cream and vanilla + white chocolate mascarpone. Gahhhhh, delicious.

I could never have imagined how funny the conversation topic 'your strangest encounter with an animal' could be. It might have been the result of good company or the combination of both; whatever it was, it was hilarious. It's best that I spare the details of the conversation I shared with two wonderful friends, but all I can say is that it could have got us kicked out of a cafe for almost performing the physical act of ROFLing. Mumma, why does laughing hurt so bad yet feel so good?

Here are some quick iphone snaps of today's outfit. Wearing the most plush oversized sweater I've ever owned (it simulates the feeling of one of those grand, affectionate nanna hugs I loved as a child) and some vintage shades.

At first it started off with small purchases. You know, a nail file here, a lipstick there. Then things started to get serious. I started buying things I probably didn't need but thought I did because of clever and enticing advertising. I started bringing home at-home Glycolic facial peels and anti-aging thermal masks...

I'm 21.
When did I decide that I really needed to burn the sh*tter out of my face to wind back the clock? I don't know.

When it comes to skincare, I'm the worst. I don't give my skin time to sort itself out and decide what's good for it, and often make a quick, inaccurate judgement of a product approx. 2 hours after using it. This often results in said product being thrown into a rather large pile of dust bunny companions or I end up donating it to a friend who quite often treats it better. It also results in me never finding a skincare "routine".

Enter: Nature's Gate*.

Finally! An organic, all-natural skincare brand that delivers results.
I'm a big fan of natural, organic** products but only those that contain natural ingredients for a significant purpose: an ingredient that has an active role in the effectiveness of the product not for the sake of adding fancy names to the ingredient list.

What I like about Nature's Gate is that they list their main active natural ingredients on the packaging with a detailed explanation of its role and benefits. And guess what, when I put it to the actual test I woke with exactly that, over and over again (it's been three weeks now - that's a record).

I'm going for my manual license and am slowly getting through the 100 hours required. All my hours so far have been with a driving instructor so In these images I'm actually trying to calm my nerves because it was just after my first time driving with the boyfriend.

You know you've found a keeper when you can wear an item all day and come nightfall it transforms into the perfect dinner attire. Yesterday I lazed about in this oh-so-silky jumpsuit and when it was time to go out for dinner, I was ready before you could say "hurrrrrrry up". I just added my navy blazer, some heeled boots, a subtle smokey eye and beach waves, cutting down more than half my getting ready time. I didn't get photos of the dinner look, but it seems there is never time for photos when you're menacingly hungry.

Spent the whole afternoon in this comfy outfit at the State Library with a dear friend drinking coffee, eating grilled vegetable turkish bread, sharing a delightful savory muffin (first time tasting one!) and talking for what seemed like 10 mins only to realise it had been hours. We were later accompanied by another friend who came bearing a surprise...

He rocked up with what could have been the oldest camera I have ever seen (surely I saw cobwebs) newly loaded with film. I watched in amazement as the lens magically popped out and down like an enchanted castle's drawbridge beckoning us. After a few snaps we were all left wondering if it had any strength left to actually capture the images but I guess that's the beauty of film - you never know what you're going to get.

A day of absolutely nothing but chillin'.

Yesterday I had so much fun putting my makeup course skills to work, with the help of my BEAUTIFUL friend's face. She hardly needs any makeup with those striking eyes but it was great to experiment with makeup colours and play up her sultry looks.

Trying two BOLD looks: the bold lip and amped-up smokey eyes.

Who would have thought how hard it would be to choose a lip colour?
We ended up mixing two together to achieve the bold lip colour - MAC Saint Germain and Chi Chi Valley Doll Matte.

Yesterday was my boyfriend and I's three year anniversary. We celebrated together with a trip to Melbourne (a treat from him - eeee!) and ended up living like kings. The last 3 days have consisted of indulging in some of the best cuisine my body has ever had the privilege to devour; city barhopping; walking, walking, walking; riding trams around the place when we got sick of walking; sightseeing; ogling people's street style; reading On The Road and the new Russh mag during the flight there and back; letting the Game Room at the airport steal all of our loose change and, you betcha, shopping.

My boyfriend ended up finding far more clothes than me (guys fashion in Melbourne is so much more extensive) - I only bought a pair of trousers, but they are the most perfect pants I've ever bought. I did however manage to find some cute accessories/jewelry. But I'll leave that for another post...

With the Aussie winter slowly but surely approaching, I'm trying to think of ways to protect my wardrobe from the gloomy shadow that is typical dark winter dressing. Don't get me wrong, I love the rich, warm hues and black leather jacket that I typically slip in to come winter, but I'm excited by the beautiful light colours seen in the 2011 Fall collections by Acne and Alexander Wang. Where I am, we hardly get super 'cold', so this brings me hope that I can embrace the cooler weather feeling rugged up, yet look light and fresh at the same time.

Today I discovered how silly I act in front of the camera when someone else is taking my photo. I'm just not used to it. So I prance around with this punch-worthy smirk on my face and I can't seem to think of what to do with my freakin' arms.

It's different taking your outfit photos with a remote in the privacy of your own company. When you're by yourself, you can emulate your favourite model's camera-ready pout, that you probably picked up during your most impressionable teen years, and act like it's "OK" cause, you know, "it's for the blog". And when you think you've nailed 'the look', the camera thinks it's comical to catch you mid-blink-smile and your profile ends up looking like Jocelyn Wlidenstein and that's not at all the kind of pouting impact you were aiming for. But, you know, that's ok because you're by yourself and you can quickly erase the results and no one will ever know that that weird moment of yours existed.

But you know what, I liked being silly today and I always like being silly with my friends and the results actually turned out alrigh'.

One thing I find strange about the blogging realm is that you're never sharing the same season with all your readers, making it hard to know what to blog about.

While half the world is welcoming Spring, I'm welcoming cooler days. Only just am I lusting after leather and knits, after enduring a humid, hot summer. What I love about Australian winters is that it's never too cold where I am, so outfits can be functional and chic at the same time.

When I woke to the sound of drizzling rain this morning, I felt the need to perk myself up with some vintage trousers and a faux fur vest. What I like about both is that they initially have a core colour, but on second glance they are not one colour but a delicate celebration of many colours.

I love a sneaky fabric that keeps you guessing.

What I also love is the hilarious mini-fights my boyfriend and I have when it comes to sharing bacon. At breakfast we challenged each other by devising our own plans to win the last bit of bacon. When I thought I had won, my boyfriend simply cooked up a secret remaining piece from the fridge and proceeded to eat it in front of me.

Spent a few relaxed days with my best friend: my sister. She's an inspiration to me and always reminds me of how much I miss her with her exciting visits. Her new camera is so fun, and I'm ever so jealous. These are some of her talented snaps.
